The New York Public LIbrary extensively collects Comic Books and related materials. It maintains a section of its website devoted to comics. One of its referrals is to www.tcj.com which is The Comics Journal and on its homepage a word search for "manga" brought up this article "A Comics Reader's Guide to Manga Scanlations," written by Dirk Deppey on Friday, 13 October 2006.

In this article Deppey describes scanlations. He states, "As noted in my essay from The Comics Journal #269, "Scanlation Nation," grassroots groups of enterprising and committed manga fans have spent the past few years producing what are known as scanlations, or amateur translations of manga not otherwise licensed for print by one of the many publishers bringing such works to market."
His article referrences scanlation websites and also reviews "The Rose of Versailles" which is included here. First he discusses a scanlation project group-Lillicious.
"Lililicious offers a wide array of manga offerings from past to present, and some of the signature works of the shoujo [Note-Mine-shoujo is manga written and drawn to appeal to teen girls] metagenre are included in their offerings. So where should one begin? I'd recommend the following:
They're both proud women, actually. Page from Ikeda Riyoko's classic shoujo series, The Rose of Versailles. refers to illustration.)
The Rose of Versailles: Ikeda Riyoko was a contemporary of the Magnificent Forty-Niners,[Note Mine-the "49'ers is a title given to a group of female artists who burst into the Japanese Manga publishing scene in the 1970's offering strong female characters demonstrating a range of emotions opposed to the one-dimensional, sexually-oriented characterizations that were drawn by the primiarily male artists of the time] if not a fellow traveler, and her Tezuka-esque Rose of Versailles was the first shoujo title by a female creator to hit it big with a readership of young girls. Her old-fashioned storytelling sensibilities has fallen out of favor in the decades that followed, but that hasn't dimmed her importance as the link between Tezuka's original girls'-manga template and the liberating release of genre and subject-matter personified by the Forty-Niners.
Note: Lillicious is a scanlation project group devoted to manga-many with a strong lesbian focus-Vol. 1 did not show any lesbian characterizations but does explore gender specific roles and responsibilities. Some of the work of on the Lillilcious site has mature sexual content. ( )
