Dante Alighieri, 1265-1321 : The vision of Hell
translated by the Rev. Henry Francis Cary and illustrated with the designs of M. Gustave Doré (75 plates just under 8 x 10 inches each); with critical and explanatory notes, life of Dante and chronology.
London ; Paris ; and Melbourne : Cassell and Company Limited, [1883]
The 1892 edition of this work is available on-line (http://www.gutenberg.org/files/8789/8789-h/8789-h.htm). However, the original prints reveal details which the electronic reproductions do not show because the quality is lacking; the images may also be cropped slightly.
These wood engravings were first published by Hachette in 1861 in a folio edition with the Italian text and French translation. Doré worked with a number of engravers, Pannemaker and Pisan the most prominent among them. He drew directly onto the woodblock that was then cut by these incredibly skilful craftsmen. The print-block was usually signed by both. Some images appear to me produced by using more than one plate, e.g. VII, 118, 119: How were the very dark areas printed? Why is one signature in white and the other in black? I would much appreciate any information on the exact printing process that was used. These bleak and oppressive images are so strong that, once seen, they stay with one. (V-10) ***** for the images ( )
