After having read rave reviews for this, I have to admit to being disappointed. Moore's story requires some huge suspensions of disbelief on the part of the reader, and has a thoroughly underwhelming conclusion that's also an abrupt tonal shift for the novel. It's a distracting little yarn, but ultimately, I feel like I could have found something better to do with my time. ( )

The plot is an interesting mix of fact and fiction revolving around one of Conan Doyle's real missing diaries (the man apparently recorded EVERYTHING in his diaries) and posits an interesting plotline. In modern time a man named Harold has recently been made a member of the Irregulars, the most prominant fan group around the Sherlock legend, is at a convention tinged with excitment when someone claims to have found said diary. Of course, he's promply found dead in his hotel room. The fact that the book divides itself between two times is handled well, but the story lacks some of the swiftness of Doyle's Holmes. Still good read for those who like a bit of history with their mystery ( )

It's been a while since I've read a mystery and this was a lot of fun! The story is really the telling of two mysteries one set in present day dealing with a murder and the theft of a lost Sir Arthur Conan Doyle diary and the other is about Doyle himself and Bram Stoker solving the murders of two women.

What a brisk story that wastes zero time moving along. I liked how the chapters switched between time periods as it really kept your interest and kept things moving along. Overall I enjoyed the Doyle and Stoker mystery more as it was simply more interesting. The modern day story was fine, but the fact the murder was actually a suicide was kind of lame and the fact they THREW THE FUCKING DIARY AWAY?!?!? Total bullshit and an insult. A true book lover and literary scholar would NEVER have allowed that. ( )

What a brilliant mix of fact and fiction! Mixing Conan Doyle's life with his most known character and a goose chase around a lost diary, everything is bundled up in a mystery that unravels a century later. Moore does a wonderful job of characterising Doyle's life - of which I learned many fascinating facts - and constructing a compelling plot that rings true from the first to the last page. I strongly recommend this read - save yourself a good sitting: you won't want to put it down! ( )

Kriminalroman in zwei Zeitebenen. Wobei die Vergangenheit authentischer und stimmungsvoller wirkt, als die Geschichte in der Gegenwart. ( )

Moore is well-steeped in Holmes lore but savvy enough as a writer to keep the reader's interest with the parallel, and eventually intersecting, plots.

...juxtaposing two separate mysteries set a century apart and featuring distinctly different sleuths. It’s an ambitious approach based on sound scholarship, but the fussy and schematic split-focus narrative only makes us long for the cool, clean lucidity of Conan Doyle’s elegant style.

So “The Sherlockian” manages to make a journey from the ridiculous (Harold White, instant detective?) to the sublime. And it is anchored by Mr. Moore’s self-evident love of the rules that shape good mystery fiction and the promises on which it must deliver.

"Moore's debut cleverly sets an accidental investigator on the track of an old document within the world of Sherlock Holmes buffs, though the results may please those with only a superficial knowledge of the great detective."

"While occasionally heavy-handed and coincidental, Moore’s fiction provides a shrewd take on the noted author and his legendary scion."
