I loved this! Just what I needed for a glorious escape into mythological realism. Kelda, Isla and Douglas are so real, I'd recognize them along the rivers and lochs. Sylvia Bishop skillfully and lyrically builds a beautiful and threatened world through precise natural history, culture, and politics and blends all this with actual British waterways, and tops it all off with Celtic mythology. A frontpiece map allows readers to follow Kelda's journey and it's fun to compare it to Google maps. Interspersed throughout are excerpts from "The Waterways: Essays on a HIdden World" on such topics as zoology, botany, sociology, governance, engineering, white-water spirits, and more.… (mer)

This book was simply a joy to read, there wasn't much more I could ask for from such a story. There were quirky characters, trains, mystery, disguises, a house plant, thievery, exciting locales, and a brave child to sort it all out in the end.
