This is a profound and powerful pamphlet for anyone living through the death of a loved one, in mourning, or facing death themself; in short, all of us. Clearbridge tells the story, simply and eloquently, of her experience around her father's death, involving the overwhelmingly painful decisions that had to be made around life support, suffering, and responsibility. These are accompanied, during and after, with exhaustion and multiple sweeping emotions of grief, anger, guilt, confusion, compassion, and... more.
The kind of support that helped her through the mourning is described, through the trauma, grief, guilt, sadness, and into revelation, self-forgiveness, and compassion. Clearbridge experienced the big questions of life, death, suffering, and God's relationship to these. Open to seeing, feeling, and discernment, she carefully explores and expresses the spiritual meaning she found in it all.
Ten wonderful prayers and poems are quoted in the text, with exquisite relevance and expression of this experience.

In this essay, Shulamith recounts the story of having to decide for another person whether they will live or die. Understanding the spiritual repercussions of such decisions may enable us to prepare for or prevent such situations – or, when that is not possible, help us to better support each other through such extremely hard times.

The title is completely backwards. The pamphlet is not about dying, it is about taking the author's father off life support. A simple (?) juxtaposition would have helped this reader, at least, be prepared for the work to come. I am sorry that Clearbridge's family was so unsupportive of her, and that she had to make these impossible decisions. I hope that with time, she will reach a place of more acceptance and understanding.
