Johnny Clegg (1953–2019)

What an absolute joy to read! Partly the stories of his early life and then his thoughts on music and culture and his great love of the Zulu culture and all of it feels like I am hearing him speak at his concerts. I was able to see him several times from the 90s on and, sadly because he was not as well-known in the US, the venues were small and it felt very up close and personal. His songs have always spoken to me and the writing here was equally as compelling. I also give credit to the editor, who assemble the notes and pieces he has started to write with what feels like a very delicate hand and lets Clegg's voice shine through. A great artist and person lost too soon.… (mer)
