Stephen P. Hinshaw, PhD, is Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley. He is also Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Vice-Chair for Child and Adolescent Psychology at the University of California, San Francisco. An internationally known ADHD visa mer and stigma researcher and the author of numerous articles and books for scientists, professionals, and general readers, Dr. Hinshaw has received, among other awards, the Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award from the American Psychological Association and the Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health from the National Academy of Medicine. A good swift overview of developmental psychology and its connections to evolution and mental illness.

This was an audible great courses, and the speaker/author was very good and clear.

Though I didn't personally enjoy this particular series as much as the other Teaching Company lectures I've sampled, it's of equivalent quality. Hinshaw explains what is now known about the human mind and what is still be discovered. After some background on evolution, the nervous system, and theories of psychology, he spends most of the lecture on a series of topics progressing through the stages of development, followed by what can go wrong - or appear to go wrong - in this process. It's a recurrent theme that "abnormal" behaviors may occur from traits that are needed, such as willingness to take risks.… (mer)
