Because I am interested in both the history and folklore of books and publishing, this book naturally ended up on my to-read shelf. When at last I opened this volume in anticipation of a pleasurable read, I was quickly disappointed. While Jeremy Lewis clearly knows and is in impressive command of his facts, he writes in a chatty style (replete with a variety of Britishisms, many of which were arcane to me), that I quickly found tedious.
Nonetheless, this is a fascinating piece of publishing history, and Allen Lane was clearly a genius in this realm. I was put off by the cad-ness of Allen Lane. But the review promising a nuts and bolts of the publishing industry in those days says I should read.

Astonishing how many copies per title were sold back when there were 20% as many people today and no internet.

A biography of Allen Lane, the founder of Penguin books.

Very interesting account of his life and how publishing changed in his lifetime, many of the changes brought about by Lane himself. As publishing goes through another upheaval with the advent of ebooks, it's good to look back at what happened when good quality paperbacks were introduced.
