Recensioner

This work is a biography vs an autobiography, however since 99% of the book was composed from the prolific letter writing of Graham, you get a good sense of the man. The book provides some good insights into the British actions during the Crimean War, where Graham served with the Royal Engineers. Surprisingly, for a young officer, Graham was very disenchanted with the senior British military leadership here. His service here earned Graham one of the very first Victoria Crosses. Graham likewise served in the short China Campaign in 1860, where he provides interesting anecodotes on the prosecution of that campaign.
Where I found the most interest is his account of his service in the Egypt and Sudan Campaigns. If Gordon's accounts are to true, he had a great deal of personal discussions with Maj Gen Gordon prior to Gordon's departure to Khartoum, where he was eventually killed.
Of note, the author blended in a great deal of personal correspondence covering Graham's interest in literature, with his beloved sister.
Overall 3.5 stars, for its insights into the Crimean war and the Sudan Campaign.
