Update: Yesterday I fell madly in love with John Milton. I don't understand why it's taken so long for this to happen, given that I've been reading him for years. Whatever the reason (the full moon, perhaps?), last night (2 May 2007, approximately 9:15 pm EST) something finally clicked and I am now blissfully, stupidly, and distractedly in love with John Milton.
Addendum to update--from Milton's Comus: "Can any mortal mixture of earth's mold/ Breathe such divine enchanting ravishment?/ Sure something holy lodges in that breast,/ And with these raptures moves the vocal air/ To testify his hidden residence./ How sweetly did they float upon the wings/ Of silence, through the empty-vaulted night,/ At every fall smoothing the raven down/ Of darkness till it smiled!"
