This novel was published sometime around 2010-2012 as I remember, and it's about a group of university students around age 20. I haven't read it, only saw it once briefly at a yard sale. The blurb said there was a J.D. Salinger connection - that one of the main characters was based on one of Salinger's sons?

Salinger had two children Margaret and Matthew.

Doing a Google Book Search for salinger where the title includes the word "but" came up with a possible title: But Sir by Oliver Andresen. It doesn't really fit your criteria other than there are students, they study Salinger, and the word "but" in the title.

Maybe you can look through the results: https://www.google.com/search?tbo=p&tbm=bks&q=salinger+intitle:but

I googled a bit with no success. If you're mad keen on finding it you might try googling with 1st word of title & then another word that might in American usage be likely to follow 'but'--seriously, really, no, and so on.

This may be a shot in the dark but could it be & Sons by David Gilbert? Instead of "but" it's "and" and it's based on a J.D. Salinger type writer.

tottman, there's someone I'd like you to find for me. I can offer you a very generous payment and you needn't get your hands dirty--when you find him I'll er see to matters myself. Interested? If so, ensure your passport is up to date and get vaccinations for the usual assortment of tropical diseases.
