A little girl is an African American slave. She is trying to learn how to read and write. But, their master doesn't allow it. So, they have to do it secretly. If they get caught they could be beaten to death. Eventually she learns the alphabet and they have a scare about getting caught. At the end of the book she figure out how to spell her name. This is a great book to understand what the slave future was and the struggles they had to go through. ( )

Rosa is a dynamic character who is a slave who learns how to read and write in secret. She had to sneak out in the middle of the night to go hide in the woods to learn the alphabet by sticks in the dirt taught by other slaves. In this time period slaves were beaten it they attempted to read or write. She goes from learning to eventually teaching other slaves how to spell. They had to stop going to the woods to learn because some other slaves were caught and nearly beaten to death. She is a very courageous person. in that she learned and taught others despite the dangers. ( )

This book tells the story of a mother and daughter who are slaves and sneak away to learn to read at night. They and other slaves meet in a pit covered in branches and learn their letters from a literate slave, though they risk their own safety and even their lives in doing so. The mother tells her daughter, Rosa, that when they are free, knowing how to read will be helpful to them. Although this particular story is fiction, African-American slaves truly did meet in pit schools, risking injury and death to learn to read. ( )
