E allora si rammentarono che quelle erano proprio le notti delle stelle cadenti, e a seguito di quell'informazione van der Straaten si mise non solo a contarle, ma in un crescendo arrivò a dire "che in realtà ogni cosa al mondo esiste unicamente per cadere: le stelle, gli angeli, con un'unica eccezione: le donne".

Melanie de Caproux, descendiente de una familia de la nobleza suiza, está en apariencia felizmente casada con el acaudalado consejero comercial Van der Straaten, muchos años mayor que ella. Cuando en su vida aparece el joven Ebenezer Rubehn, Melanie no puede evitar comparar los refinados modales y la cultura de éste con los de su rudo marido. Lentamente, su creciente inclinación hacia Rubehn la empuja al divorcio, que en aquella época traía aparejado el rechazo de la sociedad e incluso de los propios hijos.

V cizoložnici líčí Fontane osud mladé ženy, která se provdá za mnohem staršího manžela, kterého pak po těžkých citových depresích opouští a buduje si nový domov po boku muže věkem sobě rovného. Osud ženy, jež dovedla svou vnitřní silou překonat všechny překážky, je tu vypsán s podmaňující pečlivostí, a nejen pro své téma, ale zejména pro řešení konfliktu vzbudil román ve své době značné pohoršení.

K naší knize je ještě připojena novela Stina - příběh lásky prosté dívky a mladého neduživého hraběte, kterého okouzluje fyzické i morální zdraví děvčete z lidu. Když má dojít ke sňatku, Stina, vedena zdravým instinktem, slabošského hraběte odmítá.

As it says in the title, this is the story of an adultress, which takes place in 19th century Berlin. Unlike Effi Briest, it ends more or less happily.
Considering that the husband is a successful businessman, the tale moves in a very restricted circle of characters: the couple, a handful of relatives and family friends, the house guest turned lover. The elder daughter rejects her mother at the first meeting after the divorce and remarriage, but since we hardly got to know her in the preceding pages, we don't care. It is difficult to get involved in the action or a sense of the huge step Melanie takes when she elopes with her lover. Baffling. ( )
