"A middle-aged sportswriter gets a new lease on life with a heart transplant and develops an intimate relationship with his donated heart. Two brothers find in their rotting family tree the tangled roots of a dark childhood memory. A young woman travels to Thailand to reconnect body and soul and returns home, physically transformed, to face the wrath of her estranged mother. A divorced man struggling to rediscover his place in the world hits the road from California to Newfoundland, guided by an irascible, talking squid. Life on Mars, Lori McNulty's wild debut collection sears the heart with blinding black humour and whiplashfast prose. With a flawless talent for juxtaposing the absurd with the everyday, violence and discord with redemption and metamorphosis, McNulty takes readers on an unexpected ride into the core of human existence. Blending aesthetic styles that range from high realism to the fable-esque, Life on Mars exhumes life's numbing tragedies and exhilarating passions with ravenous appetite. These are raw, moving, strange stories - an unforgettable reckoning for our disconnected times."--… (mer)

What a fabulous collection, what a strong new voice. Lori McNulty’s stories are muscular and visceral, tender and filled with fun even when the subject matter is sufficient to knock your socks off. From the first story, “Evidence of Life on Mars,” you’ll be startled at how well she gets into the heads of her protagonists, whether they are 14 year old girls, middle-aged men, or transsexuals on the cusp. Some stories are beyond unusual. Others are so gritty that they make gritty realism look a bit tame. But all are written with confidence, verve, and a strong sense of how to start a story and how to end one.

For me, a few stories stood out. Both, “Monsoon Season” and, “Fingernecklace,” I’d read previously as they were nominated for Journey Prize in Canada. They do not disappoint on rereading — just as powerful. But equally impressive were, “Prey,” “Last Down,” and the aforementioned, “Evidence of Life on Mars.” I only noticed it towards the end of the book, but “Mars” does get mentioned in nearly every story, I’m not sure why. Some of the other stories that round out the collection are solid without being startling. Yet for a first collection, there is plenty of evidence that Lori McNulty will just continue to grow as a writer. I certainly will be looking forward to whatever comes next.

There is true delight to be found in this menagerie of damaged individuals, all valiantly striving to hold on to their inherent dignity in the face of severe (sometimes ridiculous) obstacles. Sad and funny, delicate and ferocious, this is an intoxicating potpourri of marvelous stories that bears repeated readings to uncover every subtle nuance.

Alienated from their significant others – and even to some degree from life on this planet – many of the characters in this book are themselves off-putting. However, we feel, if not sympathy, then at least a kind of respect for their powers to adapt and endure in such unstable environments.
