Meet Sam- he is afraid of everything. In true Mo Willems style the illustrations are simple and to the point. This is great because you get the message very quickly. The book is larger than a regular picture book- which makes showing the picture to a group of children useful. This book is about friendship and how people can be very similar but also different and together can conquer their fears. ( )

Ok, I already LOVE Mo Willems, but his books beyond the Pigeon and Knufflebunny are serious gifts to the world. SAM is about two scaredy-cat kids who are left alone by their imaginary friends and learn how to find things in common with others; even if it includes things that they are both scared of. ( )

Sam is afraid of ANYTHING and EVERYTHING - except his friend, Leonardo the Terrible Monster. And Kerry - the second most scaredy-cat kid in the whole world - is likewise afraid of everything except her monster friend, Frankenthaler. Sam and Kerry are most definitely scared of each other - so their monsters leave them alone to work it out.

I didn't love this on first reading but it's grown on me. A fun read-aloud. ( )
