This is an odd book in that it has no moral. Although Tom comes across as lazy at first, Uncle Morton is no better. Uncle Morton's house is messy and he has no food in the house. Because there's no lesson to be learned, it's an interesting fantasy. Who wouldn't like to take a walk with Rembrandt?
The pictures suit the story very well. They have a cartoonish, but rich feel. The deep colors echo oil paintings seen in a museum, but are not stuffy. They are perfect to touch and you almost want to reach in, just as Tom does.
I would recommend this book as a bedtime book that young readers could learn to read themselves eventually. It belongs in any library where the users like art. ( )
