This story is about a clam that is being protected by the ocean. The tide pulls the clam in so that it can bury itself in the sand and not get eaten by predators, such as birds. This book shows symbolism throughout it, the ocean represents a mom and the clam represents her son. The ocean has a motherly instinct and uses it to protect her son from dangers. ( )

This book was very visually enjoyable. The way the illustrator puts the words on the wave of each page helps the book flow quite nicely, literally. It was a fun read about a little clam who is busy minding his own business when a hungry seagull, a starfish, and a shell try to bother him. ( )

I think this book is very important for younger kids to read. It tells the story of a clam who is essintally being protected by the ocean. The ocean was taught is every thing it needs to know to defend itself, but it is still always there to help. What is so important is that this is a story told to a child in the book and the boy's mother is clearly represented by the ocean. It gives children a clear understanding of what a mother means to the development of a child. ( )

This book is a fair example of a fantasy because the story is told in a way that the reader believes what is happening to the clam and that it has to protect itself from the sea star, conch and gull by using its own clam abilities but in reality this would not happen, the clam would not smack a conch or talk to waves. This story also demonstrates a character that is flat, being the clam, because the reader does not know very much about the clam. All the reader knows is that the clam is trying to protect itself from other animals and trying to survive in the ocean. Age appropriate: primary. Media: watercolor and black pen. ( )

This book is a fair example of Fantasy because the setting is realistic, the ocean with ocean animals, but than the waves, the clam, and the other ocean animals talk. The clam is one of the characters that is round. We mainly get to know him through his actions in the story. He is a flat character because he does not change. In the beginning of the story he is not a good listener and at the end of the story he still did not listen to the wave talking to him.
Media used: Watercolor
Age Appropriateness: Primary ( )
