To aid his recovery from a life-threatening illness Jordan and his family move out of the city for a healthy new start. Jordan's getting enough funny looks as the new boy at school as it is, without his Mum giving him homemade soup every day for lunch! But when Jordan meets a homeless man called Harry, and gives him the soup, it is the start of an unlikely friendship. Soon the two of them begin giving soup to the other homeless people around town and when his sistershares their antics on Instagram the #SOUPMOVEMENT begins-they even make it on the news! Two interwoven stories weave throughout the book, Jayden's life now - new school, new town, no friends yet, an instagram-mad older sister, cool Dad and over-protective Mum. This is punctuated by the story of Jayden's life a year ago, in hospital being treated for cancer.
A really well-written book, exploring two challenging themes really well. I wouldn't particularly recommend it for children prone to worrying as I feel there is a lot of exposure already to bad stuff in the world for young kids. But, it's a beautiful story of friendship, change, and making a difference. ( )
