"Ever since the city of Bezim was shaken half into the sea by a magical earthquake, the Inquisitors have policed alchemy with brutal efficiency. Nothing too powerful, too complicated, too much like real magic is allowed--and the careful science that's left is kept too expensive for any but the rich and indolent to tinker with. Siyon Velo, a glorified errand boy scraping together lesson money from a little inter-planar fetch and carry, doesn't qualify. But when Siyon accidentally commits a public act of impossible magic, he's catapulted into the limelight. Except the limelight is a bad place to be when the planes themselves start lurching out of alignment, threatening to send the rest of the city into the sea. Now Siyon, a dockside brat who clawed his way up and proved himself on rooftops with saber in hand, might be Bezim's only hope. Because if they don't fix the cascading failures of magic in their plane, the Powers and their armies in the other three will do it for them"--… (mer)

Swords of the Serpentine av Kevin Kulp (Jannes)
Jannes: There really are some striking similarities between the settings of the novel and the game, from the Venice-inspired city to the semi-legal alchemy magic and swashbuckling street gangs. The novel should serve as excellent inspiration for the game, and fans of the novel might want to check the game out to have their own adventures.… (mer)

I love this cast so much. Auntie Geryss with her “I believe in you, now fuck off”. The adorable captain hooligan Daruj, with all his hugs and swashbuckling and “you be careful”s. And the Savani sisters. OOOOF they really said move we’re the mains. (Anahid, especially—I liked her bits best, probably because her love language is card games and guest beds.)

Couldn’t tell you shit about the alchemy lol but still. What a crew. Sparkling dialogue and tender relationships I'd happily read more of in a sequel. ( )

Really enjoyable. Clever but not facile - and the characters are very well developed. I'm left wanting more! ( )

Fun and inventive. Lovely world-building, centered around a Mediterranean-ish port city that feels more thought-out than many similar ones on recent fiction. Has an interesting take on magic, the meticulous description of which is actually relevant to the plot for once. The character's are not terribly complex, and a bit one-note at times, but they are likeable and drives the plot forward. Maybe not Great Literature, but a nice enough diversion for fantasy fans. It feels like a labour of love. ( )

all the details are unexpected and so much fun in juxtaposition - the city, the characters, the setup. an opera explains some of the finer points of the magical properties of the world. the apparently random rules of a game of cards draws the plot together. a harpy suddenly appears in a different universe, and even turns out to have her own charms. this unpredictable nature of things that might be read on the next page, combined with the various conflictions of the lively characters, lends a sense of whirlwind excursion to the whole book, the first of a series, and i'll happily turn up for the next one to see what the author might think up next.
