The mutants have solved for death with their resurrection protocols, and the Eternals are not having it, as they perceive this as 1) excessive deviation, and 2) they’re the only super beings to be allowed to resurrect themselves. The Eternals decide to exterminate the mutants, and the X-Men aren’t having that. The Avengers get involved because members of both the Eternals and the X-Men have also been Avengers in the past, and there are a lot of secrets being kept from everyone. Also, there’s a plan to resurrect the Celestial that the Avengers are currently housed in to try and create a new god for the Eternals so they can change their core programming. Of course, creating a new god is never going to go as planned, and with the possible destruction of the entire planet in the balance, all three teams need to come together and figure out a plan to stop the coming judgment and save the planet.
There’s a lot to unpack here, with ideas of free will, what makes a person worthy, how we judge ourselves, can we change our core beliefs, and more. There are some surprisingly deep philosophical questions going on. There’s also a lot of heroes punching heroes, because it’s a Marvel crossover event. I’m not familiar with what’s been going on in the Avengers or Eternals series, but I feel there are a lot of threads that have been leading up to this crossover in those titles, as well as what’s been going on in the recent X-titles. Read the main series and you get the entire story. Decide then if you want to read the supplemental issues, but I don’t think they’re really all that necessary. While there are a couple of surprises for the X-Men, I feel the majority of the long term consequences will be seen in the Avengers and Eternals.
