An astonishing novel of legal and moral suspense from Paul Goldstein, a stunning new legal literary talent.Meet Michael Seeley, a take-no-prisoners intellectual property litigator–and a man on the brink of personal and career collapse. So when United Pictures virtually demands that he fly out to Hollywood to confirm legally that they own the rights to their corporate cash-cow franchise of Spykiller films, he has little choice but to comply. What he discovers in these gilded precincts will plunge him headfirst into the tangled politics of the blacklisting era and then into the even darker world of Nazi-occupied Poland. Drawing on historical fact and legal scholarship, this is a breathless tale of deception and intrigue.… (mer)

1st in the Michael Seeley series. Seeley is an attorney specialising in intellectual property. His life is not going so well lately: his wife has left him, as are his paying clients, he drinks too much and an angry judge wants to see him disbarred. So maybe getting away for some days to work on an Error and omission report for a movie studio would be a good idea... But things are not so easy when he discovers that the author of a scenario in litige may not be the real author...

As an intellectual property manager, I was really interested to read that book. As Seeley goes to Europe to meet with the real author so he can sign an authorship declaration, he also must face his own reality. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward for the next in the series. I gave it a 4. ( )

4205 Errors and Omissions A Novel by Paul Goldstein (read 2 Sep 2006) This is a 2006 legal "thriller," the author being a Stanford law professor reputedly an expert on intellectual property law. Mike Seeley is of Polish heritage (his father changed his surname) from Buffalo who went to Canisius and to Harvard Law and is practicing with a big New York firm very successfully but who has a problem with alcohol. He is trying to get an assignment of rights from an author of a movie script used in the 1950s. It is an easy book to read, moves fast, and holds one's interest--and at the end things seem to run more smoothly than seems probable. And, contrary to so many Grisham "heroes" at the end Seeley decides to go back to practicing law in the little town of Buffalo, NY! A good book, having as its hero a good lawyer who elicits one's admiration. ( )

Michael Seely is a lawyer representing a studio on intellectual property rights and reveals back-alley deals done in the black list days that are still worth killing for. An overly complex book that didn't add up to much interesting. ( )
