This is a book in the Dorling Kindersley Readers Program. This is a reading level 1 book and aimed at the learning to read level of children. This particular story is about a police women and her day. The good thing about this book is that it portrays the police in a very positive light. The illustrations are all high quality photographs. There are also pictures that connect some of the vocabulary words in the text with what they look like in real life. (

In this book, a female officer goes through her daily routine, which that day included emergency traffic direction, helping a kid get home, and the unusual task of capturing an escaped bear. This book is well written and easy to read. (

A Day in the Life of a Police Officer has photos, simple text, and boxes with pictures of key vocabulary words. In telling about this community member, the author creates a storyline by having the boy become lost. Kids at this reading level who are interested in non-fiction are more likely to gravitate toward dinosaurs or trucks or natural disasters, but the author does a good job of ensuring that the topic is treated maturely, so a child would not feel she was reading a “baby book.” (

I'm a fan of DK books.

They're simple. They're informative. They're cheap. If your child is too young to read, they're perfectly good read-aloud books.

What more can you ask for when stocking your kid's library?

This book features a female police officer (a nice touch) going about her (mostly uneventful) daily routine. She does some emergency traffic direction, tells her nephew about the various ways cops get around, helps a kid get home, and captures an escaped bear.

The last one is a little unrealistic - I mean, how often do bears escape from the zoo, anyway? - but it's well-written enough that I can overlook that part. (
