This is the best book I have read from a liberal perspective on what has happened (for us, what has gone wrong) in America since the start of the second world war. The author is quick to note which liberal policies have failed and why. He notes how some policies, especially liberal internationalism, have been handed off from liberals to conservatives. He does not fear to heartily condemn the excesses of the sixties radicals. Nor does he hesitate to condemn control of America today by the for-profit corporations. This is a very well-informed and well-written analysis of how we got where we are now. While not slow to contradict conventional liberal pieties, Abrams writes as one still energized by liberal ideals.
