A delightful book about growing up and life in the village of Helmshore. Divided into brief chapters, it has excellent gems such as the following about the public library:
page 37.’It was some time before I nervously climbed the stairs to the lending department, where borrowers moved catlike among the silent stacks and where the formidable Miss Doris Worsley watched over the whisperers’.
