Told in both English and Chinese, a little boy tells his father (beginning at dinner) that he's afraid to go to bed because there are dragons under his bed. Fast-thinking father tells him that dragons like milk, but the little boy is also afraid of crocodiles. They keep running into things the little boy is afraid of until the TRex who likes to be read to before bed. The little boy asks if the monsters might come again the next night.
Unwell is the poignant story of a young Chinese American woman who journals her life story to her unborn child, who she has chosen not to know. Told in the first person narrative, the reluctant mother-to-be chronicles her difficult life story in a haunting, raw, and honest style that takes the reader on an emotional journey.
To say that this was an easy story to read would be wrong, as this gritty tale unfolds it definitely pulls at the heart strings and stirs the soul, and causes one to ponder what would you do if you were in this young woman's shoes. The reader is easily drawn into the woman's story as her life struggles determine the hard choices and tough decisions. The reader is kept wondering what the woman's final decision would be when her child is born, questioning along the way how one could choose not to be a mother, yet comprehending that you can't judge a person unless you walk in their shoes.
Unwell is a sobering and thought provoking story that will resonate with you long after the last word has been read.

A rather poignant tale of a mother who went through near-hell as a child and its effects on her in her later years. What I liked about this book is how it handles depression.
The story started out pretty boring but I'm glad I pushed through to the end. I guess a lot of people who have read the book would call me mad for tagging this book under "romance" but honestly, I thought this book handled romance so much better than many books under that genre.
What you'll never find out is:
1. The name of the persona
2. Who the father is except that he's half Italian
3. How is the mother going to leave the child
In the end, I guess I'm rather dissatisfied, if I'm going to be honest. But the ending made sense in the context and adding the things that I want answered would not (e.g. the name of the father - hey, dad must have told her by the time she read the journal; how the mother left - dad probably told her etc) I really hope that someone could have seen through her depression and really talked to her before all that tragedy. I really don't approve of people going around wallowing in self-pity but in this case, it's really hard to hate the persona, given the circumstances.… (mer)
