Reason read: ROOT, TIOLI; 8. Read a book that involves sports
Kendall Coyne is an American ice hockey professional and Olympic gold medalist. This is her story of how she achieved success. She was born in 1992 and played hockey from an early age. The book was published in 2022. It's an inspirational book and written very positively. While she explores the difficulties she doesn't dwell on them other than barriers that she had to overcome.

You would think I was a big hockey fan. In fact, I never watch hockey, I don't go to hockey games but this is my third book about hockey. I guess hockey makes interesting writing. I would recommend Beartown and Indian Horse as good stories of boys hockey. This is girls hockey and a real thing. Minnesota is mentioned in the book and Kendall actually played for a Minnesota team at one time.… (mer)

young reader nonfiction - inspirational biography/memoir, female hockey player (with the strong support of her parents and family and help from a few encouraging coaches) fights for a place on the rink (when there are literally no local girls' hockey leagues to accommodate her and very few opportunities) and becomes a multiple world champion, 2x olympic medalist, and an activist for women's equality in sports. TW/CW: sexist comments, misogyny (including malicious hot-penny dropping on the ice), attacks on the ice by other players resulting in multiple wrist injuries.

I'm not a hockey fan but Kendall (who also earned a BS and and a MS in communications WHILE TRAINING TO COMPETE AT THE INTERNATIONAL LEVEL) is a skilled writer who evokes the thrill and joy of the game. An inspiring story for any girl or person who has ever been told they can't do something.

SYNC: Kendall Coyne shares her story of determination and perseverance as she pursued her passion for hockey in spite of the hardships in her life. At a young age, Coyne was drawn to hockey, and she and her family worked hard to make her Olympic dream become a reality despite financial obstacles. She suffered multiple injuries during her time on the ice but remained dedicated to the sport. She also pushed for more opportunities for girls and women in hockey before and after winning gold for Team USA in 2018.… (mer)

Kendall Coyne is type A, a great team player and throughly immersed in ice hockey, following her older brother, Kevin's lead. She was in a class with other three to four year olds to learn to play hockey. Her parents who were not well off, worked ways to pay for classes and strength coaches. The whole family was devoted to sports.

Never neglecting her school work, she powered through the lessons and concentrated on any weak things that needed to be strengthened. Winning a gold and silver at the Olympics, teaching young kids how to play, she shared her knowledge with others and was looking for ways for improvement. She has her share of injuries during the game and endured a lot of pain with wrist that was repeatidly broken.

I recommend her book to young adults interested in sports and learning inspiration from what she does and says.
