This is a documentary book that helps you have a real understanding of its subject, because its creators used diligence, talent, and appropriate methods. Although the books is neither famous nor groundbreaking, it is a model for documentary photography. Its authors followed the great waterway from beginning to end, interviewing and photographing people living along the Mississippi and influenced by it. The well written text gives the interviewees their say, and the photography shows both the landscape and nature of the river and details we might not notice if there. While great attention was paid to picture reproduction, the book was done with a 200 line screen, the photographs are overly dark. There are silver prints tipped in the front and back covers, slightly yellowed by time in my copy.… (mer)
