Very quick and enjoyable read. This is my first dive into this author's work and I was not disappointed. I enjoyed the fluidity in which the story was told and liked the characters very much.

Wedding Matilda consists of drama, suspense, romance and surprises. Ewan never thought much about his lot in life. He was grateful for the things he had and not yearning for what he didn't. In the blink of an eye all of that changes with a shocking revelation. Heather Hiestand has written a story that is revealing and sweet but it is also a good read. Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

SYNOPSIS

Sugared violets, buttercream…but he craves her kiss most of all…  Orphaned as a boy, Ewan Hales is proud to make his living as secretary to the manager at Redcake’s Tea Shop. But the startling news that he’s heir to the Earl of Fitzwalter changes everything. While tendering his resignation to lovely Matilda Redcake, however, Ewan is struck by her spirit, the luscious bow of her lips—and a realization. Matilda might not marry a working man—but will she wed a future nobleman?  Ewan’s unruly hair and roguish kisses are tempting, but Matilda has far too many problems to consider romance. With sabotage at a cake factory threatening the family empire, she must focus her considerable willpower on keeping Redcake’s from ruin—until she learns that her young son has been kidnapped. Together, she and Ewan must uncover the truth before they can savor the sweet freedom of love…  “One Taste of Scandal is a delicious, multi-layered Victorian treat."--Gina Robinson, author of The Last Honest Seamstress and the Agent Ex series

roaring-twenties, England, romance

Interesting tale of personal growth in a time when the whole world was changing once again. Two young people of different backgrounds and perspectives meet in a rather unique working environment and find more than romance. The publisher's blurb gives hints and there is no need for spoilers, but that can't begin to prepare you for the wonderful descriptives and really interesting characters. Very enjoyable read!

"3 out of 5 stars! After years away, Bax (Baxter) has returned home to salvage his relationship with his family. However, he didn’t expect to connect with his old neighbor Yakima or to have her become the calming presence his life, especially when he finds that his family has more drama then he originally thought. Yet, will their lives mesh up enough to be anything more than a fling?

Entertaining, sweet, and full of unique twists. This sweet rockstar romance integrates its readers into small town life in Battlefield, Washington and..."

I have not had the privilege of reading any other books in this series. After reading this one I have placed them on my to-read list. Heather woven a very nice tale, but I felt there was more telling than showing throughout the story. Just my preference does not mean anything to anyone but me and how I enjoy books.

The story starts out with Dougal Alexander (I just love the name Dougal) arriving at his current employers business to confer about a missing person he is trying to find. Reading about a missing person really makes me wonder how hard it was to track someone during the 1800’s. Since modern technology has come in to play it is easier to track / find someone. But in the 1800’s how hard was it to actually find someone. No actual photo’s were available, no credit cards, no cell phones, no government number to track them. A person relied on instinct, maybe a hand drawn image, or just describing the person to inn keepers

Lady Elizabeth, aka Beth, did not want to be found. She wanted a life and love with her husband. She did not want the average life, to be dressed up and only pulled out when it was time to entertain guest or attend a party.

This was a nice read, set later than I normally enjoy reading but still a fast, fun read. I do wish the author gave more details about certain scenes during the story. I would recommend this book to any who enjoy historical romance.

Thanks for a fun read Heather. The bunnies and I give this book carrots.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review. All views are my own and do not reflect those of the author, my clients or tour companies I work with. This is not a paid review. To form your own opinion please support the author and acquire your own legal copy of the book.

A delicious read!

A Victorian romance with a difference! Scotsman Dougal Alexander, younger son to the Baron of Alix, spends his time as a private detective, occasionally assisting the police with their enquiries. 'He was not interested in the church, law or soldiering ... He was good at solving problems and finding things.' Dougal puts me in mind of another investigator of these times I love, Barnaby Adair from Stephanie Lauren's Cynster series.
Dougal has been hired by Lord Judah Shield to find his sister the Lady Elizabeth Shield. She disappeared without a trace over a year ago. Dougal has tracked Lady Elizabeth to the stews of Edinburg and the flat of one Manfred Cross, a jewel thief. The problem is that Cross has been apprehended and is now in Newgate. There is no sign of Lady Elizabeth, or was there? The Marquiss of Hatbrook, Elizabeth's older brother reminds Dougal of someone he's recently met. It's the blue eyes that are familiar. So it's back to Edinburgh and a renewed effort.
An exceedingly determined young woman, white slave trading and love found! All are intertwined into a diverting story.
Only seven chapters but a delightful read!

A NetGalley ARC

A Myrt's Review

His Wicked Smile (Red Cakes series) by Heather Hiestand

So Much More Than a Romance

This Victorian era novel contains much more than the usual romance where the hero and heroine fall into instantly in love and after a few obvious misunderstandings live happily ever after.

Gawain Redcake is a pragmatic wealthy man who has decided to boost his social position by marrying a bride from a titled family. Ann Mai Haldene is half Indian and is a skilled cook and healer using her mother's Indian ingredients and techniques. A young widow, Ann runs an inn with her brother-in-law. Gawain stops at the inn and ends up spending a passionate night with Ann before going on his way the next day. They only to come together months later. However, they stay in each other's thoughts, especially for Ann who discovers she is pregnant. Ultimately, they each go looking for the other, managing to miss each other before finally meeting in London.

There is a strong attraction and bond between the two but the story also opens up to give the supporting characters a larger impact on the story. Some characters are not as they first seem and develop more as the story goes on. Along with the romance there is the unsolved murder of Ann's first husband running through the story which Gawain becomes more and more caught up in solving.

The book takes more than a perfunctory look at the racial issues Ann faces around her as she travels to London. Ann also deals with Gawain's social snobbery as he tries to limit her use of her healing skills to those he considers socially inferior.

I liked the passion between Gawain and Ann and especially the fact they acted like grown ups - albeit not always sensible grown ups but the difficulties they faced were more than the usual superficial misunderstandings in romance novels. I was caught up in how life must have been during that time for those who were outside of Society.
I found this to be a very enjoyable read with more elements to the story than I had expected and liked very much. It's a great read for historical romance lovers.

The book is the third in the Red Cakes series and can be read as a standalone as I read it but several of the characters are from the previous books and I think their back history would be helpful in keeping them straight. If the first two are as good as this one, then they're definitely worth a read.

I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I really tried to like this novel, I was hopping it would get better for me but it didn't.
The first problem for me was that it was set in the late 19th century and nobody found it odd that an Indian breakfast was being served as well as English. Not one character made a comment.
I didn't like Ann much, I couldn't really feel where her character was coming from, and Gawain's character hardly showed any emotion at all.
This book is part of a series, perhaps I should start at book 1 to get to know some of the characters.

A complimentary copy was provided by the publisher for an honest review.

A new Series novel that will tangle you. I do like the Redcakes, even if sometimes I didn't agree with some of their behavior.
Alys is a typical modern heroine living in Regency times. And Michael Hartbrook is charming in his serious way.
Nice characters, perfect pace of the story. I can't wait to read the next...

Ms. Flynn and Ms. Hiestand have woven an interesting tale of intrigue, very James Bondish in a Steam Punk sort of way. This is my second steam punk book. I found it much more intriguing than the first, written by another author. The descriptions and visual images the writing drew forth from my imagination along with the development of these new characters gave this first installment in St. George Protector Society a great beginning.
I love how these authors have worked together to weave a fantastical tale that leads through the under grounds of London. Murder, theft, vampires, and a very well crafted mystery all unfold as you find yourself drawn into the late 1800s. I kept chuckling every time Prince Albert’s name came up, thinking about the joke my grandfather used to tell. Happy memories and a good book, what more could anyone want.
I’m already trying to figure out if the assassin Nellie and vampire Lucas will have a little romance brewing as the series continues. I guess you could say I’m hooked, because I’m going to be waiting for the next installment of their adventures.
