A gripping story, told with great economy of language and entertaining atmosphere. Each scene does double or triple duty, establishing character, describing the universe, and advancing the story.

Reader expectations are expertly set up and then overturned, but without falling into the trap of twists for the sake of twists. Instead, the mystery is revealed organically, a sort of evolution of understanding for the reader that parallels that of the protagonist.

A fast read — all too fast, I’m sad to say, although I’m certainly pleased that this short story is only an appetizer to the main course of a longer series.… (mer)
