It's hard to think of words that would do justice to this series. It combines a profound verisimilitude with a moral lens. People who seem real experience regret over past actions; others suffer grief at the loss of loved ones. Yet, for me, the net effect is life-affirming. It makes me feel that mankind, though a tiny speck in a vast universe, really matters. I don't know how to divide the credit among the actors, directors, and writers, but there's plenty to go around.

Some that have viewed the series on American broadcast television may want to remember that PBS edits shows like this, and viewing it through other means may expose one to a somewhat rawer product.… (mer)
