Inspired by the recent "Take That" hysteria, I was moved to re-read this delightfully ironic whimsy, & was reminded how it sometimes takes the utmost simplicity to de-bunk pretention.
A mere twenty pages of exquisitely-observed caricature with bitingly simplistic commentary written in the style of N.M.E. meets Janet & John, the book exposes the myth of the manufactured pop group & the skilful marketing involved in the phenomena. It never strays far from affection for its subjects, & manages to be all things to all men in its approach to the American popular culture markets.
At approximately three minutes reading time, this book is the equivalent of Haiku for the disenchanted… (mer)
