The vast majority of Canadians readily recognize Tim Horton’s name in connection with the coffee and donut empire he started. Unless one is a hockey-buff however, his long career in the NHL as a defenseman is much lesson known.

This biography for young readers (middle grades) explores the life of this hockey-great and is well peppered with archival photographs, maps, shots of hockey cards, and more, making this a high-interest title for young sports fans. This accessible biography aso includes a timeline of Horton’s life, his official hockey stats, an index, and bibliography.

Don Quinlan doesn’t veer away from the shadier aspects of Horton’s life, such as his propensity to party, or the end of his life due to a lethal combination of speed and alcohol. While he presents these facts honestly, he doesn’t demonize Horton, bur rather maintains a rather heroic spin on the man’s life. Personally, I would have liked to see a stronger stance against Horton’s irresponsible actions; it’s dangerous for children to take a man with such destructive tendencies as a role model.

Still, there is a wealth of information to be found in this volume to fill in young Canadians about who the man behind the coffee-chain is. I’ve gone through life largely unaware of the life of Tim Horton despite my love for the coffee that the chain of stores he established sells. I knew he played hockey and died a somewhat scandalous death, but that was about it. I’m glad to finally have been relieved of my own personal ignorance about Tim Horton’s life.

Due to Tim Horton’s contributions to hockey and business in Canada this title should definitely be considered a standard addition to public and school libraries across the nation.
