This "fictional memoir" will resonate with many, especially baby boomers raised by WWII veterans. It is the story of middle-aged Mark Aherne, living in Chicago with his wife, when he receives a call from his sister, who is hoping he will fly to Boston to help with their elderly parents, still living in their childhood home where the dangers of falling are prevalent, especially when combined with dementia and alcohol. Mark and his sister were raised by a WWII veteran and his stay-at-home wife in the 1950s. That generation enjoyed smoking and drinking to excess, but were reluctant to share emotions or give positive reinforcement because that is how they were raised. Mark recounts childhood memories, both good and bad, much like others of his generation.

Mark and his sister move their parents from their childhood home to an apartment, which requires an enormous amount of work sorting through the physical memories of a home where they lived for 40 years. Mark and his wife eventually settle near Boston to be closer to his aging parents and for Mark to leave an apparently dead-end job for better employment opportunities. There are poignant end-of-life moments, and a connection for Mark with his father that resolves many unanswered questions.

Extremely well-written story of a wide-eyed love story that took place in Canada in the 50's. Based on fact, it's a realistic story of love, hope and the fight to gain acceptance and independence. A working class girl and an upper class young man just want to be together- but the social differences are simply too much for his family.
I love it when you read a book where the dialogue makes you feel like you are listneing in on a conversation...flowing, not stilted. This book speaks volumes and really touched my heart.… (mer)
