Mollie Weinstein Schaffer grew up in Chicago, Illinois, and enlisted in the U.S. Women's Army Corps (WACs) at the start of World War II. After basic training, she was sent to Europe as a medical records secretary, and accompanied American troops into England, France, and Germany. She was demobilized and returned to the USA in 1945. The following year, she married Jack Schaffer, with whom she had three children. With her daughter Cyndee Schaffer, she wrote a memoir of her wartime experiences, incorporating the letters and photos she sent home, Mollie’s War (2010).
