Our "Classy Classic" for February is The Scarlet Pimpernel - Baroness Emmuska Orczy

What's It About
The French Revolution is in full swing, and the aristocracy are being sent to the guillotine in their hundreds. In the shadows, English dandy Sir Peter Blakeney working under his alter ego, the Scarlet Pimpernel – is breaking the condemned out of prison and leaving his distinctive calling card, a picture of a red flower, to torment the French authorities. A master of disguise, infamous escape artist and flamboyant swordsman, his identity is such a closely guarded secret that even his wife is in the dark. But, with enemy agents on close his tail, his failure to trust her might be his undoing.

1. The author, Baroness Emmuska Orczy full name is Baroness Emma Magdolna Rozália Mária Jozefa Borbála Orczy de Orczi.
Emmuska, meaning “little Emma”, is a nickname and is pronounced "em-moosh-ka".

2. “The Scarlet Pimpernel” was originally written as a play which received negative reviews but popular success.

3. The book was written by the Baroness and her husband in 1903.

4. The book wasn't published until after the play opened and was immediately successful.

5. The novel was translated to at least 16 languages and been adapted to film, television and even a musical.

6.Due to the success of her novel, Baroness Orczy wrote a whole series of books associated with “The Scarlet Pimpernel”. However, the books were not written in chronological order.

7.Originally there were nine members who formed The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel

8. On January 1793 ten more members were enrolled.

9. Emmuska Orczy was born September 23, 1865, in Hungry and died November 12, 1947, at the age of 82 in Oxfordshire, England

10.During World War I, Orczy formed the Women of England's Active Service League, an unofficial organization aimed at encouraging women to persuade men to volunteer for active service in the armed forces. Her aim was to enlist 100,000 women who would pledge "to persuade every man I know to offer his service to his country". Some 20,000 women joined her organization.
