This short story is set in the Great Depression, centering on a reporter resistant to cheap stories.

The prose is immersive, almost poetic at times, and the plot isn't just sweet but promising, giving, moral. It's very beautiful. I am delighted I came across it. I'll certainly be exploring other work by this author. ( )

This was lovely, especially for a freebie. A sweet short story about finding love in unexpected places, dealing with grief, but most of all, kindness and hope. ( )

This is a very short story and it left me feeling like we didn't really get to know these characters enough for impact so it's a bit unmemorable. One is a reporter who only gets paid per story and hasn't really had a break in awhile and the other is the son of a business man left with nothing after his father's death whose name was smeared. The reporter feels it'll be a great story he can sell so gets to know him and they end up falling in love. This is set in the middle of the Great Depression in New York so it deals a lot with homelessness and destitution of both the uppercrust and lower classes during that time. ( )

Whit Stoddard is a down-on-his-luck reporter during the Great Depression. Despite everything, he's managed to stay upbeat and remained hopeful. And one night a chance encounter makes it seem like those hopes might be fulfilled by Peter, a man he meets at a shelter. But there's something different about Peter, and Whit isn't really sure what to make of him. Is Peter too good to be true? Can they work through the realities of their separate pasts?

A short read, I found this to be a well-written and endearing story. It's easy to be drawn into the story and to connect quickly with the characters. There's a world built here despite the short length and Tamara Allen does a great job weaving everything together. ( )

I am not typically a fan of historical stories so I already know that is part of my bias. It wasn't one of my favorite stories but it was really well written. Peter and Whit are two characters that I found myself rooting for. They deserved a happy ending and deserve to be happy together. The only thing that bothered me is how open they seemed to be together for it occurring during the Great Depression. There seemed to be no questions around them being together all the time or living together--which I like not having that added angst but didn't seem real for the time period. Also, I found myself appreciating that Whit got a paycheck and needed a place to live so he got his apartment back...but is he keeping it? Was it just one story he had or will there be more that can sustain them continuing to love there? I know this was only a short story but I would love a follow up to see how these guys juggled the world after the Depression. ( )
