This is a book of the stories behind the pictures that tell the stories. Steve McCurry's photos are stunning - his use in many of his photographs of two or three extremely vibrant colors that just jump out of the page at you is absolutely amazing and allows those photos to have such an impact on the viewer. Combining this with the back story of the hows, whys, wheres, and whos of his work, providing an explanation of his process, makes for a very interesting and engaging book! Included are his coverage of wars and strife in primarily Asian and Middle Eastern countries, his serendipitous and horrifying photos of the collapsing Twin Towers on 9/11, and his exploration and documentation of cultures before they disappear into a different landscape and the modern age. I especially enjoyed reading about his iconic photo of the Afghan girl with the beautiful green eyes, and the follow up story of trying to track the same women down years later - I remember seeing both articles in National Geographic many years ago. McCurry says, "Through my pictures, I can help others to explore the planet," and I for one am grateful to get this fantastic glimpse of people and places so far off the beaten path for many of us. "The iconic photographs" van Steve McCurry vind ik het mooiste fotoboek dat ik in bezit heb en ook dat ik ken. In dit boek staat een overzicht van de foto's die McCurry in de afgelopen 30 jaren heeft gepubliceerd. "Voorbij de camera" is het nieuwste fotoboek van McCurry. In dit boek staan de verhalen achter de foto's. Er staan behalve een aantal van zijn mooiste foto's ook andere documenten in zoals: paspoortpagina's, treinkaartjes, dagboekbladzijden. In 14 hoofdstukken wordt een overzicht van het werk van McCurry gegeven. McCurry begon zijn carriëre als persfotograaf voor een plaatselijk dagblad in Amerika. Dit was niet wat hij zocht. In 1978 kocht hij een ticket naar India en nam honderden fotorolletjes mee. Hij werd bekend door de foto van Sharbat Gula, een Afghaans meisje van 12 in een vluchtelingenkamp. Verder reisde hij ontzettend veel, zo is hij alleen al 80 keer in India geweest. McCurry is vooral bekend om zijn prachtige portretfoto's, meestal gemaakt in Azië. In "Voorbij de camera" staan een aantal van de mooiste portretfoto's die McCurry gemaakt heeft. Verder biedt het boek voor diegenen die "The iconic photographs" al in hun bezit hebben niet zoveel nieuws. ( )
