De ber att få titta på hennes rum. Rummet är litet och där finns inga ledtrådar till vart hon kan ha tagit vägen. Det enda de hittar är ett kodad meddelande som hon har lämnat efter sig innan hon stack. Efter en kort tid återvänder Solando till sitt rum. Hon är hel och ren men ingen vill ge Teddy och Chuck några upplysningar kring hennes återkomst. Frågorna blir bara fler och fler: Var har Rachel hållit hus? Är det över huvud taget möjligt för någon att försvinna från ön? Vad är det som försiggår i C-paviljongen dit Teddy och Chuck nekas tillträde? Samt inte minst, vem är patient 67? Sjukhuspersonalen är allt annat än samarbetsvilliga och Teddy bestämmer sig för att lägga ner utredningen. Följande dag ska han och Chuck ta färjan tillbaka till fastlandet. Då drar en cyklon in över ön och det är startskottet för en rad oväntade händelser. Mystiken tätnar och Teddy kan ej längre urskilja vad som är sanning och vad som är lögn. Mina tankar Jag läste Patient 67 första gången i oktober 2007 och efter att jag hade läst sista sidan snurrade frågorna runt, runt i mitt huvud. Efter en andra genomläsning har jag det mesta (dock inte allt) klart för mig. Tempot i Patient 67 är allt annat än högt men Dennis Lehane lyckas ändå bygga upp en slags psykologisk spänning som gör att läsaren upplever en slags krypande känsla i kroppen. Hela tiden är det skriande behovet att få veta hur det går närvarande och man måste läsa en sida till, och en till, och en till … Intrigen är så genialiskt uppbyggd att läsaren till slut dras in och “blir” Teddy: man känner samma skräck, förvirring och rädsla som honom. Ja, det är till och med så illa att alla vändningar som historien tar framkallar migränanfall. Kanske inte lika häftiga som Teddy drabbas av, men de är i alla fall kännbara. Jag brukar inte ta till så här kraftiga uttryck i min mun, men det här är ingenting annat än ett mästerverk! Den 19:e februari har Shutter Island biopremiär i Sverige. As you travel with Teddy the story becomes more and more about Teddy than about the missing mental patient. The job of the reader is to decide what is real and what is make-believe as you travel with the main character Teddy. You hear the whispering echoes of the past as you find more and more clues. All illusions of control and all surefooted terrain ware away as you get deeper and deeper into the twists of the story. The context of the book has been written once, and then written completely anew, and then twisted once again the third go around of writing this twisted tale. The story line however stays constant and helps one misunderstand the novel. You will read yourself to a knotted rope, for the author has left enough chords to twist around your neck and hang yourself by. Breathing becomes something you need to remind yourself to do as you get caught up in the current of Shutter Island. The story looks at mental health treatments of the past compared to what methods are used today. Lehane asks his readers, "What is the fine line between treatment and sterilization of the mind?
