This book describes many things that originally came from Russia, including inventions, sports and games, food, fashion, musical instruments, animals, arts and crafts, and words. In Look What Came From Russia by Miles Harvey, a lot of culture is discussed from beginning to end. From beginning to end, this book covers various aspects about Russia that was new information to me as I am sure it is to other people. For instance, the type of food that is eaten in most of Russia is very different from that which we eat in the United States. There are those who even believe that wine may have been invented in Russia, whatever the truth is, it is quite evident that Russians take pride in their cultural traditions. After reading the information in this book however, one might question the credibility of the facts contained in its pages. At the end of the book, however, is a page dedicated something that did not come from Russia. Russian dressing is one thing that was not invented Russia, but rather in the United States. To me, this confirms the validity behind the books’ contents and allows the reader to know the truth. As far as science is concerned, this book touches on a few contributions Russia has had in the world of Science today in age. There are those experts who accredit the invention of irrigation to the Russians. From 6,000 years ago, Russians have been perfecting the art of redirecting the flow of water to eventually be led to their fields and crops; ultimately irrigating their agriculture. The water that is redirected is done so by people who dig out tunnels that guide the water to a farmer’s desired location. In addition to irrigation, Russians invented the nuclear power plant that is commonly used in the U.S. as well as the rest of the world. In 1954, the first power plant began operating and spurred a great accident in 1986 which caused people to take extreme safety measures. Space travel is also a point of pride for most Russians when they launched the first manned space craft. This book is probably most appropriate for higher level elementary students, such as 5th or 6th grade. A diorama can be manipulated with a large body of water elevated on a hill and students are asked to redirect the flow so as to irrigate a field. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
