On the morning before her 67th death, it is business as usual for Jesse Sullivan: meet with the mortician, counsel soon-to-be-dead clients, and have coffee while reading the latest regeneration theory. Jesse dies for a living, literally. As a Necronite, she is one of the population's rare two percent who can serve as a death replacement agent, dying so others don't have to. Although each death is different, the result is the same: a life is saved and Jesse resurrects days later with sore muscles, new scars and another hole in her memory. But when Jesse is murdered and becomes the sole suspect in a federal investigation, more than her freedom and sanity are at stake. She must catch the killer herself or die trying.… (mer)

About half way through the book I thought about giving up, but I persevered and ended up really enjoying it!

World-building was good, it takes place in modern day and age with the exception that a small amount of people have powers. All scenes and environments were well written and clear.

Character development was good. Jesse is, I wouldn't say broken, but very afraid of letting people get close to her since she's afraid to end up like Rachel, in a mental hospital, when her lot of death replacements are over and her brain can't take the damage anymore. It really doesn't help when she starts seeing an angel, who (of course) only she can see and talk to.
While some reviewers mentioned that the love triangle bothered them, it didn't for me. It is part of who Jesse is, of her choices in life and her fears. While she doesn't always make the "right" decision, it still fits her profile.
The support cast were good, Ally and even Lane were worked out sufficiently and felt real. Brinkley felt like the glue that kept it all together and kept the story moving forward.

Pacing and flow were decent. There is a good amount of conversation, and well... since this is the first book of the series that is to be expected, though the balance is pretty even between all the talking and action.
As I've said earlier on, halfway through the book there was a lull in the story, it crawled forward and at the time of reading I felt impatient for the story to continue. Things picked up not long after though and it was smooth sailing till the end :)

The book in itself is well written, some little errors here and there, but nothing that bothered me.
There is sex in this book, though not described (if that is important to you).

All in all it was a nice surprise! It was more than I have thought it would be, so yeah, I will be reading the next in the series :) ( )

Acquired for free, so expectations going in were low. Exceeded them. Fun, interesting concept, some weak parts Even the different flavors of subsets of the same religion never agree on everything, and supposedly all the religions of the world have banded under one church? not believable human behavior ( )

This book was a lovely surprise. I am extremely happy to have found it. I enjoy zombie books. Usually they terrify me. Not so this book. The author has come up with a fresh, unique zombie story. I didn't think it was possible. Along with the unique storyline, the author gave us solid characters. I loved them. This story has a lot of humor injected into it. I love the sarcasm! I absolutely had a good time reading Dying for a Living. The book is part of a series. It doesn't end with some crazy event that is continued in the second one. Rather it dangles the mystery that we already know with the promise that we will know more in the future. That is how we find ourselves caught in a web of a sarcastic zombie, angels who we are not quite certain are there to help or harm, extremist church members, romance, intrigue and dying, hopefully without a death. If you are looking for a unique, laugh out loud, reading adventure this is your book. If you wanted to read a zombie book but they scare you too much, give this one a shot.
For those who want to know, this book contains same-sex relationship talk and some violence, though not very gory. ( )

Well written but undermined by the rather silly magic system. My feeling is either do the work to come up with something plausible or make it a mystery. Magnets. Magnets? ( )

A great concept that fell a little short in execution. I enjoyed this book, but found it confusing at times, and I didn't really click with the main character. However, the writing was solid and the supporting characters were interesting. I'd read another in the series. ( )

Jesse Sullivan dies for a living literally. Jesse is a necronite and has a rare neurological disorder that she can die and resurrect herself a few days later. Jesse is a Death Replacement Agent and her handler is Alice (Ali). Jesse can take the place of a person when they are dying. Jesse has also been seeing an Angel and someone is trying to kill Death Replacement Agents. I really enjoyed this fantastic urban fantasy novel.
