The materials presented in the book, cover a wide variety of topics some of which are social life and spirituality of medieval people, growth of towns and cities, life expectancy, causes of death, etc. It describes the phenomenon of "Black Death" that swept through Europe, killing nearly forty million people in seven years. Due to the fact that the knowledge in the field of the medicine was still very weak, and the majority of the population was uneducated, medieval people thought that God sent plague and all other illnesses to punish them. Since during Middle Ages, there were very few trained doctors, they were in great demand, thus usually worked for the richest and the most powerful people. It was very interesting to find out how the doctors diagnosed and treated their patients. One of the common practices were bloodletting and herbals potions. This type of information is guaranteed to get the attention of upper elementary grades students. I will definitely recommend this almanac because of its simplicity of the text and a nice variety of information that is accompanied by the colorful reproductions of medieval manuscript and art work. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
The Middle ages, from A.D. 500-1500, were once described as dark and stagnant--a thousand years without a bath. Now, the Middle Ages are celebrated as a time of immense social change, of outstanding achievements in art and science, and of deep spirituality. The Inga biblioteksbeskrivningar kunde hittas. |
