A screwball thriller with a Manic Pixie Girl/Conman at the center! The second book in the Crush series requires Crush to extricate his friend from some trouble she's in. Or is it just a long con? Satirizing Hollywood and movie making, this novel drives the action from a hillside California mansion to a New Orleans cemetery, and back to the Oscars in time for the climax.
I liked this book well enough to not only recommend it, but also to seek out the first book in the series as well. ( )

I was pleased to receive this book as a November Early Reviewer. And i plunged right in. After seeing how the author's other books were described i was looking forward to a fun and exciting read. Unfortunately, the author did not deliver. I'm a fan of Raymond Chandler, and Phoef Sutton is no Raymond Chandler. The plot was a good one. The characters, however, were very very underdeveloped, barely two-dimensional. And the writing was just enough to go from one plot point to another without any particular style. I'm not sorry i read it, but i wouldn't recommend it unless you have nothing else to do while waiting in an airport. ( )

I loved this book! A wild, suspenseful whodunit with twists and turns and an unpredictability which tested my limits to NOT read the end of the book first. This was my first interaction with Crush and he was fabulous (tough, gritty and yet surprising hopeful when it came to his relationship with Rachel). I have already added the first Crush book to my TBR. Well done. ( )

"Heart Attack and Vine" is Phoef Sutton's second book about Caleb Rush, street-named Crush. In this outing, Crush has to act as a bodyguard for a young con artist who's a surrogate sister. Rachel has plotted and connived her way to stardom, garnering an Academy Award nomination along the way without ever quite outrunning her past. And one of her prior victims seems intent on exacting revenge for a con years ago.

Filled with snappy dialogue and colorful atmosphere, the book charges along with Crush in pursuit of Rachel, her film career, and whatever long con she's working. It's all fun and games until people start dying. Once the bodies start to pile up, Crush has to untangle Rachel's con to find the killer.

Fun and enjoyable. I plan to read the first book in the series, "Crush". ( )

I've never read this author before and found it a quick read but also fairly formulaic. I also found the tinsel town characters quite annoying -- but maybe that was intentional. ( )
