Blighty: British Society in the Era of the Great War, by Gerard DeGroot (read 24 Nov 2003) This is a 1996 book which covers much the same territory covered by The Deluge: British Society and the First World War, by Arthur Marwick (read 20 Oct 1985). Some chapters were more interesting than others, with chapter 14 entitled 'The Dead, the Living, and the Living Dead' being exceptionally arresting. This book also has an excellent bibliography, and therein are listed no less than 24 books I have read and which I remember as of great interest. For one interested in the First World War this is an excellent book on life in Britain in those fatal years from 1914 to 1918. ( ) inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
This is an analytical survey of Britain in the era of the Great War, focusing particularly on the period 1907-1922. It questions the common assumption that, because the war had a devastating impact on the British people, its social consequences must therefore have been equally lasting. The book argues that prewar social structures and attitudes proved surprisingly resilient and the innate conservatism of all classes in Britain ensured that postwar Britain was little changed as new economic economic and technological circumstances allowed.
