Jacob Reese enjoys the quiet life, running a coffee shop and renting out his cottage in The Hollows, Vermont. But the calm is shattered when a woman who looks eerily similar to his ex-girlfriend Laura turns up to stay in the cottage, and leaves a mysterious note in the guest book. Now Jacob's seeing Laura everywhere -- a glimpse of her face across the street, her music box left outside his house, a gift he gave her years before hanging from the trees. But it can't be Laura. Because Laura's dead. Someone knows Jacob's secret -- what really happened the night Laura died -- and they're out for revenge.… (mer)

3.5 stars!

This was a fast, enjoyable read. The twist wasn't quite as exciting as I had hoped, but I read a ton of mystery/thrillers so I tend to be a little picky. I really appreciated the details of the town as well as the narrator's relationship with his dog. It felt so genuine.

Thanks so much to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read it! ( )

Jacob runs a coffee shop and rents out a cottage in Dark Hollows Vermont. A woman comes to stay in his cottage who looks very much like Laura, someone he used to know. Only the woman cannot be Laura as she is dead and only Jacob knows how she died.

This book appealed to me due to the cover. Books that have a moody looking isolated house on the cover are for me.

I was expecting something a little creepy and foreboding but the story didn't go down that route. For me the story was a standard going to get you, I know what you did scenario. The story follows Jacob as he tries to find out who the woman is and what happened to Laura.

This book didn't wow me but I did finish it. Not quite three hundred pages long and any longer i would have got very bored.

Disappointed slightly with this book but I read it, it was an ok read and I would probably try another by the author. ( )

small-town, small-business, thriller, psychological, twisted, dog, Vermont*****

Riveting. The past comes back to haunt him even as the nightmare comes more frequently. It's a scary psychological thriller made more so as it's set in a bucolic part of New England. This is not my thing and I only read the first third, but a fan of this sort of thing read it while visiting and declared that it is excellent so I'll take her word for it. She kept her nose in it pretty much nonstop till done (even though shrimp scampi and all). That's why I give it high marks.
I requested and received a free ebook copy from HarperCollins Publishers/HQ Digital via NetGalley. ( )
