As I close the book, I feel emotionally drained. What a story! What an emotional rollercoaster! This book brought to mind the 1957 romantic movie “An Affair to Remember.” Did you see it? Two people fall in love and promise to meet up in six months atop the Empire State Building. On that day, the woman is running late. She jumps out of her taxi and gets hit by a car, resulting in her being a paraplegic. She does not want her love to see her, so she ignores his attempts to contact her.

“Goodbye, Orchid” is a modern version of that story. Deeply in love, Phoenix sees Orchid off to her adventure in China. But a tragic accident in the subway leaves Phoenix a broken man. Now he has to make the hardest decision of his life. He believes it would be best to let Orchid go in order to protect her from his trauma.

The author has delivered a real page turner! A story of love, sacrifice, and resilience. This story is very raw with emotion. The author has very realistically presented a character going through the stages of grief – facing the loss of the life he had, trying to build a new life, the blow to his self-esteem, and the perception of how others may now see him.

And then there is Orchid. She is so confused, not knowing why Phoenix has rejected her. Orchid has her own trauma to overcome, and it may prevent her from being able to accept Phoenix as he is now.

Both Phoenix and Orchid will need to dig deep into their own perceived inadequacies if they are to find their way back to each other.

I highly recommend these two beautifully written books – “Orchid Blooming” and “Goodbye, Orchid.” ( )

Such a beautifully written story! It's a love story but so much more! Orchid and Phoenix's story reminds us that sometimes love really can conquer all. I really enjoyed being able to hear from both of them. It really paints a clear picture. Just a heads up once you start reading you won't be able to stop! Once again a powerful, emotional and thought provoking page turner!

I picked up this book and read it almost in one sitting. I was drawn to Phoenix and Orchid. Although, I do feel like Phoenix did not give Orchid a fair chance in the beginning. As the author says; Phoenix and Orchid did get their happy ending but they really had to work at it. They just needed time. However, I did understand where Phoenix was coming from due to the tragic accident that he endured. He was bitter and thought that his life was over. Yet, he learned that just because you have a disability does not mean that that you can't still "live". Live for family, live for friends, live for loved ones, and very importantly...live for yourself. This book does not read like a debut novel. I can't wait to see what author, Carol VanDenHende writes next. ( )

I was able to get an audio-book of this novel. It was wonderful! This was written and narrated by the author. The narrating was very clear, with variation in her voice for the various characters, The voices were well-chosen and mostly consistent. When she did slightly deviate, she quickly adjusted so it was difficult to catch. She successfully "lived" through her characters.

This was a very poignant tale with a touch of "love at first site" saga. There is a carrer moe which distances the couple for a short while. It quickly evolves into misfortune and trauma. The characters are endearing, and all feel so real. It is hard to remember it is fiction. Be sure to keep a box of Kleenex handy! The scenes are easily visualized

It can easily be considered as a "stand alone" but I can only imagine what the reader/listener would be missing if he/she made this mistake and not pursue the next two in the series.

The Title and Cover Image are very well chosen.

^Beware: there is a few "F-Bombs" and a few other crude expletives made at emotional times. There is also a detailed sex scene, yet not explicit.

+This audio-book was gifted me with no pressure whatsoever to post a positive review. This is my honest review. ( )

I've been thrilled that Goodbye, Orchid has been awarded sixteen times. It's won the IAN Outstanding Fiction award for best first novel, Pinnacle Achievement award for multi-cultural fiction, and Royal Dragonfly award for disability awareness, among others.

Goodbye, Orchid was named a most anticipated novel by Travel+Leisure, Buzzfeed, and Parade Magazine. GLAMOUR's recommends Goodbye, Orchid as a gift based on Karin Tanabe's declaration that the novel is "a modern important take on the power of love."

This story is inspired by combat-wounded veterans and raising money for USA Cares to support military families. Please keep in touch with my work via social media and my newsletter, links here https://linktr.ee/cvdh ( )

What happens if fear and silence thwart a promising relationship? Can love overcome silence, and what would it take to make that work?

In Goodbye Orchid foxy, successful Phoenix puts his girl friend on a plane to China, and on his way back to the office his life is permanently altered when a homeless man he’s trying to help pushes him onto the train tracks. The train crushes an arm and a leg. On a scale of 1-10, the adjustments he faces are at least a 12. Is his handicap insurmountable? And how will the love of his life, who witnessed her parents’ murder and can’t stand to look at pictures of the disabled, react to the new Phoenix?

Set mostly in a burgeoning boutique ad agency in New York City, this is a well-researched story about what the loss of limbs can do to a couple. Readers will empathize with both Phoenix and Orchid, the girl friend in China who doesn’t know what happened to her lover. Author Carol Van Den Hende delves into the ever-escalating emotional consequences that each of them face at the same time she creates a promising story of overcoming physical obstacles. It’s also a story of clashing egos, the need to be right, and resistance to compromise.

Phoenix’s twin brother, Caleb tries to help out of a combination of guilt and familial loyalty, not that he was in the train station. A concerned mother, a pushy assistant, and a collection of former girlfriends round out the cast. The author tackles a subject that’s still underrepresented in a compelling way.

Author Carol Van Den Hende is an award-winner who writes about resilience and hope. Goodbye, Orchid won the 2020 American Fiction Award for urban fiction, 2020 Pinnacle Achievement Award for multicultural fiction, IAN Outstanding Fiction for Best New Novel, Royal Dragonfly Award, Audiobook Reviewer Author of the Year and more. It was named one of the most anticipated fall reads by Buzzfeed, Parade, and Travel+Leisure, and has been featured in Glamour, the Chicago Tribune, the LA Times, DIYMFA, WABC Radio among others. She’s also a speaker, strategist, Board member and Climate Reality Leader.

If you like quick romances filled with love, heartbreak, and courage, this is a book you shouldn’t miss.
