"When Lenora Perry's dream of becoming an acclaimed singer dies a painful death, she attempts to escape her mistakes by fleeing north--directly into the path of an all-too-dashing Mountie. Though the man in scarlet appears eager to be rid of her, his home provides security, and his sister offers friendship--two things Lenora is desperate for after discovering her pregnancy. With the past dogging her footsteps and her future uncertain, dare she consider new dreams? Upholding the law makes up the fabric of Constable Edmond Bryce's existence. As his five years of service draw to an end, he must decide whether or not to continue in his father's footsteps--an increasingly difficult decision now that Miss Perry has infiltrated his life. Though she's the daughter of a parson and a close friend to his sister, Edmond can't push aside the feeling that Lenora hides more than she tells. But duty calls, leaving little time for matters of the heart"--Page 4 of cover.… (mer)

I was smitten from the first chapter with Where Wild Roses Bloom. I loved all the mystery and touch of suspense, but nothing compared to the setting. My mind's eye was abuzz with all of the imagery that surrounded this heartwarming story! I have read very few books that are set in Canada so reading in this setting was a refreshing change of pace. I was captivated by the Canadian history and the writing was so hypnotic that it was able to put me there in that era. I felt completely immersed the entire time I read, and I hallowed every moment.

Lenora is ashamed of her past and is shackled by her shame, something I believe many of us could relate to. There was some pretty deep subject matter that was tackled, but it was handled with care, and actually became a character in and of itself.

Melinda’s character (Edmond’s sister) was a favorite of mine, which isn’t shocking because she is an absolute doll, and I hope to see her featured in a future novel. Her helpfulness and care are so heartwarming and I would love to see her get a happily ever after of her own.

Melinda’s brother isn’t so bad either. Sweet Edmond doesn’t want to get involved with anyone because he was the son of a mountie, and he doesn't want to put any person through what he went through. Talk about thoughtful, and how he supports Lenora is the kind of support we all dream of. Can you say swoon?!

The only element I struggled with was how drawn out the ending felt. I think it could’ve been shortened a bit yet still had the same effect. Otherwise, I truly enjoyed reading this novel. I appreciated that the heroine wasn’t perfect, and admired the determination and love that came out of hurt and past mistakes. It just goes to show how important decisions can be, and how they can reshape your path, and that even if we hold ourselves in captivity thanks to our past mistakes, that is not the life God intended for us. God loves us and wants the best for us and reading Where Wild Roses Bloom is such a great reminder of this fact.

I’d venture to guess most Americans don’t have too much knowledge about early Canadian life or Canadian law. And for that, I apologize to our friends to the north because this history is just as fascinating as our own.

In Where Wild Roses Bloom, Angela K. Couch immerses readers in the land, the hardships, and the life of a Mountie with a healthy dose of romance and suspense to make the story even more savory.
Lenora has made mistakes and has to learn to trust in God’s forgiveness as well as to forgive herself. Edmond’s life centers around what is right vs what is wrong. He sees the world in black and white, but when Lenora enters his and his sister’s lives, his preconceived notions are tested.

What I appreciated most about Couch’s book is the fact that whether we’ve lived upright lives or whether we have a past, we are all the same in God’s eyes. No matter what we’ve done or where we’ve turned away from Him, He welcomes us back with grace and redemption.

Disclosure statement: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own. ( )
