There were a few places where the pacing almost lost me, but it ended well. ( ) Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Publishing for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. Pub Date: June 6, 2023 While this book isn't bad I struggled to connect to the characters. It seemed right up my alley with some fantasy elements but I really have been struggling with romance lately. So if you enjoy romance books this may work great for you! The narrator was a hobgoblin observing events (which could be really funny with how they described something or compared humans to their race) so you don't really get any sense of emotions or thoughts of the characters they are watching. I also felt like there where two plot points, one of which gets wrapped up at about the 50% mark and then the other one took off so, while everything was connected, it also felt like two books. This story is narrated by Puck, or Robin Goodfellow, who sprinkles in plenty of references to A Midsummer's Night Dream. He's chosen to tell the story of Maelys Mitchelmore, a beautiful young lady in the midst of her season in Bath. However, she's under a curse: her dress disintegrates at a ball, food turns into disgusting bugs, and wasps attack her. Georgiana, the so-called Duke of Annadale, is a suspect, but Maelys is also attracted to the older woman. It's an enjoyable story, but it dragged in places as Maelys and her friends, Miss Bickle and Mr. Caesar, try to solve the mystery of who has cursed her. The romance never really grabbed me; perhaps, the distance created by a story narrator was the problem or that I never got Georgiana's POV, but I'm used to knowing more about the character's feelings in Hall's books. The fantasy bits were interesting, and I love books where magic and the Regency era are intertwined. Miss Bickle is a great character, my favorite, and has the best dialogue. I generally love this author's books and I like how the sub-genres are often switched around. But this one was just okay for me. Romp is as good a word as any to describe this tale. It has quirky characters, particularly cousin Miss Bickle. I alternated between wanting to strangle and hug her. She certainly would make a party interesting. Maelys and the Duke spend an inordinate amount of time dancing around their feelings for each other, ones that keep getting complicated by curses. Suffice it to say there's plenty of action, humor (both normal and dark), and intrigue in this one. Definitely worth reading. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
