Raschka uses ink, oil pastel, and watercolors on butter board (looks a little like a brown paper bag) to make the loose, jazzy art for this brief story of Mary Lou Williams' life and music. Piano keys are black and white, Mary's hands are brown, and sound is represented by color. Except for the cover, no whole faces are shown in the book, including Mary's: only hands, and the sides of heads, so music/color can be shown flowing into ears. Back matter includes a capsule biography, an illustration of Mary, and a quote. The only source is https://www.marylouwilliams.foundation/ ( ) inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
"A picture book biography of Mary Lou Williams, an American jazz pianist and composer who wrote hundreds of compositions, recorded hundreds of songs, and wrote arrangements for Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman, and is an artist often overlooked in the canon of American music because of her gender and skin color"-- Inga biblioteksbeskrivningar kunde hittas. |
