—Nouvelles Clés, (27), Automne 2000, (p. 72) This is quick tour of a dozen philosophical subjects with brief summaries of the main thoughts had by thinkers so far. Whilst the tone and language are straightforward and aimed at non philosophers (do they exist?) the content is straight out of my prejudiced idea of philosophy. Logical statements made about unproven premises resulting in some weird and wonderful conclusions. I enjoyed the bits on God, Atheism and freedom partly because I am interested in the subjects and have heard some of the theorems and thought referred to in wider contexts before. It was good to find out about these areas in a little more detail. The rest of the book left me a little cold mainly I think because I struggle to see the practical application of the thoughts expressed even as a "philosophy of life". Brief and fairly painless. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
In this remarkable little book, Andre Comte-Sponville introduces the reader to the western philosophical tradition in a series of sparkling chapters on the 'big questions'. In doing so he reveals the essential bones of philosophical thought and shows why philosophy is relevant in our day-to-day lives. In his brilliant and concise writing on morality, politics, love, death, knowledge, freedom, God, atheism, art, time, Man, and wisdom, he inspires the central question of philosophy - how should we live? - and provides the reader with signposts towards a happier, wiser life. Comte-Sponville has his own opinions, of course, but he is first and foremost a teacher, and summarises the thinking of great men quite well (Spinoza, Kant and Montaigne seem to be referred to most often). He nevertheless provides the occasional flourish of his own – "What is essential is to prove that we are not unworthy of what humanity has made of itself" (pg. 10) – and the book as a whole is a decent starting-gun into exploration of "the art of reason" that "leads to the art of living" (pg. xv).
