This book is narrated by Audrey (Oddly, Audray) and the tortoise Winnifred. Audrey has many fears (fear of flying is a big one) and is so frank and honest in this book it is funny. Her tortoise Winnifred has been left behind in Oregon while she flies home to Newfoundland for her father's funeral. He was killed by being hit in the head by the trunk of a Christmas tree tied to the roof of a vehicle. That tells you a little about what this book will be like. I read this book as part of the CBC reads bookclub, and thoroughly enjoyed it. ( ) This is a funny, very clever, heart warming novel. I find it hard to describe without giving away plot spoilers or making it sound ridiculous. There are chapters narrated by a tortoise! And they are fabulous! This is not a heavy read, but the reader should pay attention as the book is full of puns and word play that enhance the story. This is a book with many fully drawn characters you will fall in love with, wish you had met, and some you think you already may have met! Take your time and enjoy the wonderful writing! This is a story of a journey filled with whimsy. Audrey tries hard to deal with the situations around her but somehow things get confusing at times. And the people around her are in many cases are baffled by her. But there are heartwarming moments too. And the moments that her beloved turtle Winnifred (so spelled with two Ns) comes into view to give her perspective are just as equally heartwarming. http://wp.me/p46Ewj-Ks
Come, Thou Tortoise defies a simplistic categorization. It is a somewhat sprawling, but well structured comic novel with many serious messages and much marvellous insight. It's extraordinary, original and simultaneously both deep and lightheartedly charming. It plays tricks with words such as are rarely assayed by mere mortals. The book is boldly energetic and playful, the dialogue bearable, the heroines (human and reptilian) endearing. Curiosity about what will happen next is duly aroused. The trouble is, everybody's so nice. The real success here is not the reptilian point-of-view or playfulness with language, but that Come, Thou Tortoise manages to be touching without excess sediment. Sorry, sentiment. Jessica Grant’s debut novel is one of those rare books that manage to entwine humour – in this case, even outright silliness – with poignant insight and a captivating plot.
